EcoSports Green Hubs bring solar power, water and inclusion to 35 communities

SORDO has established 35 EcoSports Green Hubs across Puntland and Banadir and trained more than 50 young leaders to run hub programming. Each hub embeds clean energy, water and circular economy infrastructure directly into an existing sports facility rather than building anything new: solar lighting extends safe playing hours into the evening without diesel generation, rainwater harvesting captures runoff from court surfaces, and waste-to-value models are built into how each site operates.

The hubs also work as inclusion platforms. Young people with disabilities take part in storytelling and EcoSports activities, and girls’ teams have become one of the most visible expressions of women’s participation in public life in Garowe — a court full of spectators watching young women play is itself a change in what is considered normal.

On 23 June 2026, the Green Hubs network hosted Garowe’s Olympic Day with the Somalia National Olympic Committee, bringing two girls’ basketball teams onto a community court in front of a packed crowd alongside a community marathon and climate awareness activations. The network has since carried that momentum into Let’s Move Somalia, a June–August 2026 campaign built around the “+1 Strategy” of inviting a friend to move together — including a joint SORDO–Hawa Feminist Coalition sports event on 2 July 2026 in Garowe that placed women’s teams at the centre of a public community fixture.
